Jennifer Lopez's $20M Gamble: The Unconventional Trio Unveiled

Jennifer Lopez’s latest album, This Is Me… Now, and an accompanying musical film, This Is Me… Now: A Love Story, are set to be released on Friday. Additionally, a documentary titled The Greatest Love Story Never Told is scheduled for release on Feb. 27. Despite her longstanding commitment to working harder than others, this project is an exception even for J.Lo.

Expressing her thoughts on the trilogy, Lopez shared with Yahoo Entertainment that after completing the music aspect, she sensed a need to delve deeper into the narrative. She expressed a desire to create something extraordinary for the music, stating, “I felt like the music deserved that… I wanted to do something that had never been done before.” The aim was to “tell a different story.”

The financial commitment to this endeavor amounted to $20 million of her personal funds. The album, musical film, and documentary collectively explore Lopez’s romantic journey, culminating in her revived romance with Ben Affleck.

In the Amazon original This Is Me… Now: A Love Story, directed by Dave Meyers, stars like Affleck and Jane Fonda feature in a unique, genre-defying vision. This unconventional approach, teetering between rom-com, sci-fi, and fiction, led to a potential investor withdrawing, citing a lack of understanding of the concept. The accompanying documentary, directed by Jason Bergh and produced by Amazon MGM Studios, provides insights into the creation of the album and movie. Its title, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” is derived from the love letters Affleck wrote to Lopez.

Recalling Affleck’s influence, Lopez credits him with instilling confidence in her ability to undertake the musical film. She recounted to People, “I was like, ‘I don’t write, I don’t do this.’ He was like, ‘You do. You write, you direct, you produce, you choreograph. You do all the things. Start stepping into that, start owning a little bit of who you are.'”

Upon presenting the final cut to Affleck last year, she received high praise. According to Lopez, Affleck stated, “You made a movie. For you. You made a great movie. You did it.” This acknowledgement, as she shared with Variety, is the ultimate compliment, regardless of the project’s future outcome.
